AFFIRMATION OF FAITH   UMH #886         Delbert Dearing
“The World Methodist Social Affirmation”
Leader:  We believe in God, creator of the world and of all people; and in Jesus Christ, incarnate among us, who died and rose again; and in the Holy Spirit, present with us to guide, strengthen, and comfort.

People:  We believe; God, help our unbelief.

Leader:  We rejoice in every sign of God’s kingdom:  in the upholding of human dignity and community; in every expression of love, justice, and reconciliation; in each act of self-giving on behalf of others; in the abundance of God’s gifts entrusted to us that all may have enough; in all responsible use of the earth’s resources.

People:  Glory be to God on high; and on earth, peace.

Leader:  We confess our sin, individual and collective, by silence or action:  through the violation of human dignity based on race, class, age, sex, nation, or faith; through the exploitation of people because of greed and indifference; through the misuse of power in personal, communal, national, and international life; through the search for security by those military and economic forces that that threaten human existence; through the abuse of technology which endangers the earth and all life upon it.

People:  Lord, have mercy; Christ have mercy; Lord, have mercy.

Leader:  We commit ourselves individually and as a community to the way of Christ:  to take up the cross; to seek abundant life for all humanity; to struggle for peace with  justice and freedom; to risk ourselves in faith, hope, and love, praying that God’s kingdom may come.

All:  The kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven.   Amen.

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH UMH #881 Delbert Dearing

I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

*SONG OF PRAISE “Amazing Grace” (vs. 1,3,6) UMH #378
Amazing grace! How sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found; was blind, but now I see.

Through many danger, toils, and snares, I have already come; ‘tis grace hath brought me thus far, and grace will lead me home.

When we’ve been there ten thousand years, bright shining as the sun, we’ve no less days to sing God’s praise than when we’d first begun.

SCRIPTURE READING John 11:1-45 Delbert Dearing

MESSAGE “Jesus Breaks Our Chains” Horace Abbott

HYMN OF INVITATION “Trust and Obey” UMH #467

When we walk with the Lord in the light of his word, what a glory he sheds on our way! While we do his good will, he abides with us still, and with all who will trust and obey.

Chorus: Trust and obey, for there’s no other way to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.

Not a burden we bear, not a sorrow we share, by our toil he doth richly repay; not a grief or a loss, not a frown or a cross, but is blest if we trust and obey.

Repeat Chorus:
But we never can prove the delights of his love until all on the altar we lay; for the favor he shows, for the joy he bestows, are for them who will trust and obey.

 Repeat Chorus:

Then in fellowship sweet we will sit at his feet, or we’ll walk by his side in the way; what he says we will do, where he sends we will go; never fear, only trust and obey.

Repeat Chorus

*SONGS OF PRAISE

“Come Now is the Time to Worship”
Come, now is the time to worship. Come, now is the time to give your heart. Come, just as you are to worship. Come, just as your are before your God. Come. One day, every tongue will confess You are God. One day, ev ‘ry knee will bow. Still, the greatest treasure remains for those who gladly choose you now. Come, now is the time to worship. Come, now is the time to give your heart. Come, just as you are to worship. Come, just are you are before your God. Come.

“Heavenly Sunlight”

Walking in sunlight, all of my journey; Over the mountains, thro’ the deep vale; Jesus has said “I’ll never forsake thee,” Promise divine that never can fail.

Chorus: Heavenly sunlight, heavenly sunlight, Flooding my soul with glory divine: Hallelujah, I am rejoicing, Singing his praises,
Jesus is mine.

In the bright sunlight, ever rejoicing, Pressing my way to mansions above; Singing his praises gladly I’m walking, Walking in sunlight, sunlight of love. Repeat Chorus:

“Isn’t He”

Isn’t He beautiful? Beautiful, isn’t He? Prince of Peace, Son of God, isn’t He? Isn’t He wonderful? Wonderful isn’t He? Counselor, Almighty God, isn’t He, isn’t He, isn’t He?

*WORDS OF PRAISE from Psalm 63:1-8 Delbert Dearing

Leader: O God, you are my God, I seek you, my soul thirsts for you;
my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where no water is.

People: So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary, beholding your
power and glory.

Leader: Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you.

People: So I will bless you as long as I live; I will lift up my hands
and call on your name.

Leader: My soul is feasted as with marrow and fat, and my mouth praises you with joyful lips, when I think of you upon my bed, and meditate on you in the watches of the night;;

All: for you have been my help, and in the shadow of your wings I
sing for joy. My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me. Amen.

*HYMN OF INVITATION “Because He Lives” UMH #364
Vs. 1: God sent his Son, they called him Jesus; he came to love, heal, and forgive; he lived and died to buy my pardon, an empty grave is there to prove my Savior lives.

Chorus: Because he lives, I can face to tomorrow; because he lives, all fear is gone; because I know—he holds the future, and life is worth the living just because he lives.

Vs. 2: How sweet to hold a new born baby, and feel the pride and joy he gives; but greater still the calm assurance, this child can face uncertain days because he lives. Repeat Chorus:

Vs. 3: And then one day I’ll cross the river; I’ll fight life’s final war with pain; and then as death gives way to victory, I’ll see the lights of glory and I’ll know he reigns. Repeat Chorus:
